Rehabilitation of the historic theatre

ROIG has been selected to renovate the historic theatre-hall of the El Retiro Recreational Society in Sitges (Barcelona). The aim is to obtain the definitive licence for activities and reopen the doors of this mythical venue for theatrical performances, concerts, dances, etc.

The works will make it possible to renovate all the facilities of the hall and recover the original appearance that Miquel Utrillo devised – after the fire of 1916. The vaults built by the engineer are still there, but covered by the false ceiling that was placed in 1970. With the renovation work, the roof will disappear, as the materials do not comply with current fire regulations. Also the railings, the boxes or the material that makes up the stage will have to be renewed.

To ensure that the sound of the room is optimal, the ROIG team will cover the vaults with a special material that will absorb the sound. Likewise, the railings will recover the original appearance, but incorporating fabrics to absorb the reverberation of sound waves.

The renovation also includes actions on the ground floor, achieving a new multipurpose room. This room can be joined or separated from the theatre-room thanks to movable panels. Just above the multipurpose building, on the first floor, the light, sound and projection points will be installed. And on the second floor, a new room will be built that will serve to offer more spaces to its members.

The entrance to the theatre-hall will also be updated. The current men’s toilets on the ground floor will be relocated and installed next to the women’s, and in their place a cloakroom will be gained. The dressing rooms will also be renovated. In addition, the current auditorium will be adapted to hold small conferences or book presentations.
